Bio for Steve Meyerhardt
Steve Meyerhardt, aka Mean Mother Frog, has been performing music publicly since the age of 21. Though playing guitar and singing since he was 12, he finally got up the nerve to perform at Open Mike Night at the Chez Coffeehouse in Columbia, Missouri in 1966. He became a regular at the Chez, performing most weekend nights along with the likes of Lee Ruth, Cathy Barton, David Para and Paul and Win Grace. Steve was one of a talented group of performers who graced the Chez stage at that time.
However, Steve noticed that he could hardly hear himself over the noise of patrons’ conversations. At that time, Steve’s repertoire consisted mostly of covers of folk songs. So Steve decided to try expanding his repertoire to include humorous tunes written by himself, Martin Mull, Shel Silberstein, Ray Stevens and others. In doing so, Steve was able to retain the attention of his audiences throughout his sets. Steve discovered that bringing laughter to his audiences also enhanced his enjoyment of performing.
Born the son of an itinerant Obstetrician, Steve’s earliest musical influence came from the plaintive cries of women in labor. You can hear this influence in Steve’s
haunting falsetto on songs such as Early Mornin’ Rain/Everybody’s Talkin’(Theme from Midnight Cowboy).
Seriously, Steve’s earliest musical influences came from listening to R&B radio stations in St. Louis in the early sixties and from the folk music craze of that time. His diverse repertoire reflects the influences of Jimmy Reed, Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf, James Tayor, The Kingston Trio and Peter Paul and Mary.
The most exciting gig of Steve’s long performing career came in 1978 when he was the opening act for John Hartford at a club called The Brief Encounter.
Another memorable performance took place in Georgetown in Washington D.C. in the mid- seventies. During a promotional tour stop for Fernwood Tonight by Martin Mull, Steve, then the marketing director for a chain of Northern Virginia record stores,
performed a few Martin Mull songs for Mr. Mull while dressed like a penquin.
Without going into a lengthy explanation of why, suffice it to say that Martin Mull was very moved by Steve’s performance.
Steve invites audience members to play percussion toys on some of his
humorous songs which opens the door to some fun interactions between
entertainer and audience.
Today, Steve performs at various restautants and resorts in the mid-Missouri area including Cafe Berlin, Ninth St. Deli and Cooper’s Landing,
